It is always difficult for a sequel to live up to an award winning movie, but Toy Story 2 does an admirable job. Back with most of the same characters and
with many of the same voices, Toy Story 2 picks up a few years after Toy Story. Woody is stolen and Buzz and the guys go on a rescue mission. Woody finds out
he is the center piece of a larger collection from an old TV Show - Woody's Roundup. We meet the other Toys in the collection and they become part of the
fun in the mission to get Woody home. Pixar's animation is usual, which is to say astounding. It improves upon the original Toy Story but almost
seemlessly. Al, the toy shop owner and thief who stole Woody, was a pathetic but all too familiar character in the toy collecting world. Movie merchandise,
especially Disney and others in the fantasy genre, are a collectors haven. Anyone familiar with the "toy collecting" underworld of seedy
opportunists and profiteers will know the Al character very well - in fact he looks like most of them. It is hilarious to see Pixar and Disney calling these
vultures out and exposing them for the slime that they (usually) are. The whole bit about the Prospector (in it's original box!) and his apparent value is
dead on, as is the scheme to sell to the Japanese, who pay very high dollar for icons of American culture. Toy Story 2 is a very good movie - not as good as
the original, but it holds up in its own right as one of the best animated features Disney has ever made.

NRFB! In fact, I haven't seen this movie yet because the DVD is still in it's original shrink wrap.
Just kidding. Al was the best character of the movie. He could have stepped into any toy/star-trek/game convention and fit right in. I've never understood what it is about that species, but they aren't normal. I blame climate change. Love the opening with Rex playing the video game. Geri made an excellent 'cleaner', though I think that painting over 'Andy' is a toy collector No-no. The toy gags in Al's Toy Barn were clever, and the Woody's Roundup merchandise just blew me away. The realism was just par excellence. The only thing I wanted more of was Zerg. TS3 better have more Zerg.

Definitely a TS3 in 2010 (Boy that's weird to write!). Initial plot revolves around a recall of Buzz Lightyear toys. Put in the context of current events,
that means he's made in China and is covered in lead paint.

A guy I know was interviewed by Pixar regarding Toy Story 3. He is a tester of toys so they wanted to know all he does for the recall in the movie. But I am hearing of a different plot now about Andy going away to college so the toys are dropped off at a daycare. I personally think the recall would have more laughable opportunities but either way i can not wat for it! |
