Pre-Production/Prototype pins, or PP pins as some call them, are pins that were created to allow Disney Team Members to obtain an idea of what the pin will look like. These pins are used strictly to compare the artwork and only a few of them are made. If anything is found not to be up to Disney standard then a second group of PP pins will be created for review. PP pins are noted with a PP on the back of the pin but some earlier pins will not have anything on them. Also, there are pro product labels on some of the pins to indicate pre-production pins as well. These pins are made before production and even before the Artist Proof pins (AP pins for short) so the designs can be drastically different, color changes or no changes at all. Also, you could find a PP pin where the design was scrapped all together and the only ones in existence is the PP pins. Have you been lucky to fine these mysterious pins..
How you can come across them…..
1. Pin Parties are a great way to find these type pins (From the pin trading boards, silent auctions and trades with other pin heads)
2. Cast Members can have them on their lanyards as well; you just never know where they could pop up.
Here is one of my PP pins I have come across in my Pin Trading career. Do you have any? Share with us
